Who We Are
Way back in 1938, our
foundation year, the world was almost incomprehensibly different to our
present day existence. War was looming and, with the threat of another
European conflict on the horizon, most people welcomed entertainment as a
diversion from their immediate worries.
It was against this
background that the Royal Tunbridge Wells Orpheus Male Voice Choir was
formed by a small group of men whose aim was to provide local audiences with
quality choral music.
Although times have changed and those far-off days are now, for many, just
faded pictures in the family album, the aim of the present-day Orpheus
remains unchanged. Our musical standards are as high now as they were over
60 years ago - quality choral music is our business.
Essentially, the Orpheus is a
Kentish choir, performing charity concerts within the borders of the county.
However, the Choir does travel further afield and has visited a number of
European countries in recent years. Visits by foreign choirs are encouraged
and the Orpheus has hosted choirs from Denmark, Holland, Germany,
Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Belgium.
We seek to provide local and national organisations and causes with the
opportunity to raise funds for their projects, but as well as charitable
work the Choir is also available for corporate entertaining, public
functions, themed events and any occasion which requires the presence of an
act "out of the ordinary". With an extensive library of music totalling over
500 items we are able to tailor a concert to fit almost any event.
